McHenry MPS Therapy Near You
Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) Therapy, is a modality that our trained physical therapists use for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. It is a form of neurostimulation that provides an integration for neuromodulation science into pain management. What that means is we use a specific device called “Dolphin Neurostim” which has been designed specifically for reducing soft tissue pain. The technique uses a point stimulator (like a pen tip), placed on the skin on specific areas of the body to provide short concentrated DC microcurrent to reduce an overactive nervous system to reduce pain and relax muscles. Other terms commonly used to describe MPS Therapy are: Dolphin Stim, Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS), Scar Release Therapy (SRT), MPS Concussion Recovery Therapy, and Microcurrent Biostimulation. Our McHenry physical therapy clinic and physical therapists are trained to help patients with MPS therapy near you.
MPS Therapy involves utilizing a unique device called a Dolphin Stim Unit. One or two units may be used at a time to affect the nervous, endocrine, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems. The stimulation assists the natural healing properties of the body such as the release of endorphins which are our body’s natural painkillers. The unit allows a McHenry physical therapist to target tissues to help reduce sympathetic stress for both chronic and acute pains.
Why use MPS Therapy?
Our McHenry County physical therapists use the Dolphin Stim Unit, along with other manual therapy techniques, with the goal of balancing the nervous system to improve healing. MPS therapy can be utilized for pain management, scar tissue healing (old or new scars), concussion recovery, and to reduce stress. Dolphin Neurostim is scientifically proven to be effective for: back pain, neck pain, knee pain, body-wide pain, post-surgical pain, stress reduction, and concussion recovery.
This modality is said to “whisper” to the body allowing for an effective and natural way to quickly relieve pain and tension in the body. The effects on cellular physiology and growth are perfect to treat old and new scars. The effect on relaxing muscles and trigger points causes improvement in muscle activation patterns, which assists in reducing dysfunctional movement patterns, thus reducing painful movement patterns. This can help speed up the patient’s return to active rehabilitation.

Don’t Like Needles? Try McHenry MPS Therapy
We are also one of the only physical therapy clinics in the area to offer dry needling. If you are not a fan of needles, MPS Therapy may be a viable alternative treatment. MPS Therapy utilizes therapeutically integrative protocols using the Dolphin Stim Unit to provide point-specific DC microcurrent. It is able to help with deregulation (calming) of the autonomic nervous system. When there is dysfunction in the body, it results in hypertonic (tight) muscles and hypersensitivity with trigger points and pain.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS), has two parts, sympathetic and parasympathetic. When the sympathetic part of our “fight or flight” and when it is overactive it is considered upregulated. Our body is stressed when we are in this state. This upregulation can cause pain, hypersensitivity, pain, muscle tension, and more. When the parasympathetic part of the ANS is activated, it is when we are in our “rest, digest and restore” state when we can heal. The parasympathetic and sympathetic should be in balance, but when there is trauma, pain, emotional distress we can block our natural ability to heal. MPS therapy uses the dc microcurrent to calm and balance the nervous system.
What is Scar Release Therapy SRT?
For Scar Release Therapy, two Dolphin Stim Units are utilized for this treatment with one on each side of a scar. The dc microcurrent is used on a biphasic setting (+/-) to push and pull the current through the area allowing it to “repolarize” the area and reduce the influence it has on the surrounding area. This treatment can improve mobility of the soft tissues, reduce redness, speed healing, reduce keloids, improve posture, and decrease pain. We have found by treating scars, pain can be reduced in other areas of the body and is very effective for the treatment of chronic pain. Scars treated can be all types, new, old, post-surgical, and traumatic. We have had good results on the orthopedic scope and joint replacement, general surgical, and cosmetic scars. There are even times when this modality is used on scars, you can visually see the scar and surrounding tissues change during the session.
